Born out of an intergovernmental agreement signed between the UAE & France on March 6, 2007, Louvre Abu Dhabi is the first universal museum in the Arab world. The museum brings together both the ancient & contemporary works of cultural, historic & sociological interest from around the world.
Spread over an area of 24,000 square meters, the iconic Louvre Abu Dhabi was designed by Pritzker-prize winning architect Jean Nouvel. This premier cultural institution is located in the heart of the Saadiyat Cultural District & showcases artwork from around the world with particular focus upon bridging the gap Eastern & Western art.
Designed as a seemingly floating dome structure, the mesmerizing web patterned dome that is 180 meters in diameter allows the sun rays to filter through to keep the museum illuminated during the daytime. Out of the overall museum area, 6000 square meters is dedicated to permanent collection of antiques & 2000 square meters is allocated for temporary exhibitions. The dome is pierced with openings to look like interwoven palm leaves in an oasis when rays of sunlight pass through it.
